VPN and Censorship Statistics

Most VPN statistics pages cite each other. Every figure here is computed from a primary source you can check yourself, or measured by us — and the method for each one is written down below it.

People living where blocking is measurable

1,576,610,202

internet users across the 6 countries where website blocking was confirmed in more than 1.0% of measurements

Read this carefully. A blocking rate is a share of measurements, not of people. This figure counts everyone online in a country where blocking was proven often enough to clear the threshold; it does not claim those people are individually blocked, and most of them are not, most of the time. It is a measure of how many live under a regime that demonstrably blocks, which is a different and more defensible claim.

For scale, the same World Bank figures put 43,578,111,958 people online across every country we have data for.

By country

Ranked by how many internet users live there, among countries over the threshold.

Country Internet users Online Confirmed blocking
India IN 1,024,705,867 70.0% 1.73%
Indonesia ID 207,950,074 72.8% 1.20%
Russian Federation RU 135,426,285 94.4% 4.43%
Iran, Islamic Rep. IR 78,869,619 85.3% 29.36%
Turkiye TR 77,093,385 89.8% 2.00%
Italy IT 52,564,972 89.2% 1.16%

How blocking has moved

Confirmed blocking rate over the last 120 days, smoothed with a 7-day trailing average. A country crossing a threshold matters far less than one that has doubled since spring, and only the series shows that.

Who arrives already behind a VPN

This one is ours. People run our IP checker to find out whether their connection is protected; a share of them turn out to already be on a datacenter or VPN address when they arrive. Nobody else publishes this, because nobody else has it.

Collecting since Sept. 13, 2026. No country has passed 200 lookups yet, so there is nothing here worth reporting. It will fill in.

What is stored: a daily count per country, and how many of those were on a datacenter address. No IP addresses, no user agents, nothing that describes one person. It is a tally, not a log.
