How to access Reddit in Iran

Measurements from Iran confirm Reddit is blocked: 59% of tests hit a block page or another fingerprint only censorship produces.

The measurements

2534 tests run
58.7% blocking confirmed
26.2% anomalous
5.4% loaded normally

Confirmed blocking.

Confirmed and anomalous are different claims and are never added together here. Confirmed means something conclusive was seen. Anomalous means a connection failed in a way censorship causes — and so does an ordinary outage. Adding them is how blocking figures get inflated several-fold.

What this does and does not tell you

These measurements come from volunteers running OONI Probe in Iran — often on a handful of networks, sometimes on one. A block can be real on one operator and absent on another, and a percentage in between describes neither. If it works for you and not for someone across the city, both of you are right.

Getting through it

A VPN moves your connection's apparent origin outside the filtered network, which is why it restores access to Reddit when the block is applied at the network level — as all of the blocking measured above is. What decides whether it works is not the VPN's encryption but whether the network can recognise the VPN itself and block that too.

That is a question about protocols, and it has a real answer rather than a marketing one: which protocols get detected, and how. Plain WireGuard is matched by a single rule and is the first thing a filtering network blocks; AmneziaWG is the same tunnel with its shape changed.

Two things a VPN does not fix, since most guides omit them. If your device keeps asking your normal DNS resolver where sites live, that resolver still sees every site you open — and in a filtered network it may also be the thing doing the blocking. And an account that is already signed in identifies you regardless of where the connection appears to come from.

Using a VPN in Iran:

Only state-approved VPNs are lawful. Unapproved services are widely used anyway and are the target of continuous blocking.
